Don't sacrifice your soul to chase your dreams.

“stop romanticizing” is a phrase so annoyingly overused that whenever i see a tweet that starts with those two words i immediately shut my brain off and scroll (assuming my brain isn't already shut off since twitter does that to a person).

if there’s anything i’ll say “stop romanticizing” for, it’s this: stop romanticizing sacrificing your soul, your well-being, and your relationships with the people you love and matter to you in the pursuit of your passion, dreams, and ambition—

a passion for something is hard to find (that’s why it’s so satisfying when u do find it). it’s strong, like a drug, and burns brighter and louder than anything. but like anything that burns, it burns out. passion is fickle. it’s temporary. it fades away. it leaves you. it returns. and it leaves you again. a constant cycle of exhaustion and rest, of hurt and healing.

dreams are your hopes embodied in a vision. it’s as pure of an essence to your character anyone could possibly get. but we need to wake up to the reality that our dreams are only as naïve as the hopes they’re founded on. they aren't always as they seem. they end abruptly. and hopes, like all good things, have a tendency to be blind.

and what else is ambition but passion-driven dreams? dreams tainted and morphed by a desire, a yearning for more. ambition is gluttonous. it eats itself and is never satisfied. it sets your heart to a different beat, a beat to a higher purpose. directing your spirit to glory, but glory at what cost?

these things, passion, dreams, ambition, are strong. immensely strong. they are powerful, powerful enough to change the world. but is it worth the price of your soul? for memories forever priceless? for relationships built on trust and the constant give and take? for good will and happiness and love and joy and all the things we take for granted?

because at the end of the day you are left with nothing and no one. not the money, not the assets, not the accolades, not the accomplishments, not even your friends or your family or your loved ones that experienced life with you along the way. at the end of the day all you’re left with is your soul. and our souls are the only truly unique thing about us.
